San Juan County Backcountry

Welcome to San Juan County. We are one of Colorado's smallest counties, located in the San Juan Mountains in the Southwest corner of the State. The Town of Silverton is the only town in the county. We are located 50 miles North of Durango, Colorado and 60 miles South of Montrose, Colorado on US Highway 550.

San Juan County has miles of hiking trails and 4wd roads, ice climbing locations, skiing at Kendall Mountain and Silverton Mountain, snowmobiling and beautiful scenery. The Alpine Loop is open, weather and road conditions permitting, for your enjoyment.

We encourage everyone visiting the backcountry to purchase a search and rescue card, available at various locations in Silverton. This card covers some of the costs of search and rescue operations should you find yourself in that situation. If you have a Colorado hunting or fishing license you are already covered and do not need to purchase the search and rescue card. We encourage those going on extended hikes to check-in at the Sheriff's Office, 1557 Greene St. (Court House) to let us know your departure and return dates as well as other information. Or EMAIL SJC SHERIFF'S office with your trip route. We can advise you on a good location to park your car where we will be happy to keep an eye on it while you are gone. Of course, we would appreciate the courtesy of notification that you have returned safely so we can take you off our list!
