ABOUT THE COUNTY CLERK AND RECORDER'S OFFICE

The San Juan County Clerk & Recorder's Office, led by County Clerk Ladonna Jaramillo and Chief Deputy Charles Alex Lanis, fulfills several essential roles in local government, including running federal, state, and county elections, recording and maintaining public records, motor vehicle services, marriage licensing and certificates, and county liquor licensing.

The San Juan County Clerk and Recorder office is not associated with the Colorado District Court or San Juan County Court. These entities are part of the Colorado Judicial Branch. The San Juan County Clerk and Recorder office does not have access to legal cases, criminal records, divorce records, or court dockets, etc. To contact the Clerk of the Court for San Juan County, please call 970-387-5790 or email SanJuanClerk@judicial.state.co.us. Elections

The Clerk & Recorder serves as the chief election official for the county. Like all elections in Colorado, San Juan County conducts its elections via mail ballot, as well as having a single Voter Service and Polling Center (VSPC) located at the County Courthouse in Silverton. The office manages voter registration, distributes ballots, oversees in-person voting, and ensures compliance with state and federal election laws. It also supports elections for local entities such as the Silverton School, special districts, and occasionally special elections for the Town of Silverton.

Recording & Public Records

The Recording Division of the San Juan Clerk and Recorder’s Office is responsible for recording, imaging, preserving, maintaining and providing access to all documents that are a permanent public record in San Juan County. These documents may include real estate transactions (including plats, easements, egress/ingress rights, mineral rights, etc.), marriage licenses, civil union licenses, military discharges, death certificates, uniform commercial code (UCC), county government documents, and certain types of vital records. The division also provide document copies and printing services to the public for a fee.

The Recording Division also issues marriage and civil union licenses and certificates for unions in San Juan County.

Motor Vehicle Services

As an agent of the Colorado Department of Revenue, the Clerk & Recorder's Office handles vehicle registrations and license plate issuance for county residents. However, driver's license services are not available at the county level; residents must visit offices in Durango or Montrose or utilize online services provided by the state. The Silverton Public Library occasionally hosts the Colorado's mobile drivers licensing unit, DMV2GO.
